12. Narcisse "Narcissus" Louis Dorr was born on 2 Dec 1844 in Mobile, AL, died on 5 Mar 1916 in Panola Co., MS at age 71, and was buried in Davis Chapel Cemetery, Panola Co., MS.

Narcissus' parents, Louis and Frances Dorr, arrive in America at Mobile, AL in 1840 and marry in 1841. He is born on February 2, 1844. At the time he has a two-year old sister Sylvia and a one-year old brother. Sometime after Narcissus is born but before 1847, the family moves to Kemper County, MS. We know this because the record of his brother Norman's birth shows him as being born in Kemper County.

Very little is known of Narcissus' younger days. He has four sisters and seven brothers. He marries an Englishwoman named Sara Jane Wilkins on February 2, 1849 in Sumter, AL. Sumter is on the Alabama-Mississippi border next to Kemper County. Sara Jane is a daughter of one of Louis' neighbors.

From Louis' letters:

Narcissus has his own place two miles from his father and is working for him in return for part of the crop. His father Louis is never quite happy with where he is at the time and tries to convince Narcissus to move to Arkansas or Texas, but Narcissus refuses to go.

In early 1871 Louis and all of his children that were in Kemper County moves to Panola County, MS which is in the northern part of the state. Louis moves to a bluff that overlooks swamp country and that year they are all in poor health. Martin and Narcissus rent 30 acres of bottomland two miles from their father. They pay 50 pounds lint cotton per acre, but the land is creek bottom and never fails to make less than a bale an acre. Around August Narcissus' oldest boy Edwin dies of the flu and in October Narcissus himself becomes very ill. Martin returns from Arkansas and joins Narcissus on the farm. Evidently, due to the poor heath conditions, Narcissus is ready to return to Kemper County in the fall of 1871.

In the fall of 1872 Louis sells his land on the bluff and moves eight miles to the east. For a time Narcissus and Norman rent land in the neighborhood and work together. Later Narcissus is able to buy 80 acres of land adjacent to his father's place for $900. His father writes, "he built a very good house on it. Part of it is creek bottom and made a bale (and made 18 bales of cotton the first year) to the acre besides plenty of corn and potatoes." Norman is working with Narcissus at this time.

In 1875 Norman rents land from Narcissus and is working on his own house. Henry is staying with Narcissus.

In 1876 Louis writes, "Narcisse and Shug [?] are well and are making money like Jews. He has paid for his place and has besides no less than 1000 dollars on interests. Henry is still working with him. All three made nearly 30 bales of cotton last year." In 1877 Narcissus and Edward buy another farm in the neighborhood, 160 acres for about $10 an acre. Martin lives with Louis but is working for Narcissus.

Narcissus and Sara have a total of nine children, five boys, and four girls. In November 1906 Sara dies. In March 1908 Narcissus marries Lucinda "Cindy" Jackson. In 1916 Narcissus passes away and Cindy dies in 1920.

Narcisse married Sara Jane Wilkins on 2 Feb 1869 in Sumter Co., AL.,4 daughter of Josiah Richard Wilkins and Mary Burton. Sara was born on 15 May 1848 in Halifax Co., VA, died on 3 Nov 1906 in Panola Co., MS at age 58, and was buried in Davis Chapel Cemetery, Panola Co., MS.

Lucinda was born on 15 May 1859 in Rockland Co., NY, died on 19 Mar 1920 in Panola Co., MS at age 60, and was buried in Davis Chapel Cemetery, Panola Co., MS. They had no children.

15. Norman Franklin Dorr was born on 27 Mar 1847 in Kemper Co., MS and died on 13 Feb 1922 in Panola Co., MS at age 74.

From Louis' letters:

It appears that Norman went to Texas in January 1870. A letter dated March 1, 1870 Louis indicates Norman is in Texas with Albert and the widow. In the December-January timeframe of 1970 Norman leaves Texas and moves to Panola County. Her is married and works for his father for part of the crop. In October of 1871 Norman's wife, Fanny, dies of childbed fever after only five days of sickness.

Norman works for his father for a fifth of the crop, but the death of his wife and his bad health since Fanny died have disgusted him with the country. I intends to go backer to Kemper shortly to regain his health and then move back to Texas spring of 1872.

But it appears that Norman stays in Panola County and his father writes in March 1872 " Norman is with me again." The next year Narcisse and Norman rent land in the neighborhood and work together.

In 1875 Narcisse buys 80 acres adjoining his farther's place, and Norman rents land from Naricisse. Norman also builds his own house that year and remarries in the fall. The follwing year Norman buys a good plantation about 3 miles from Louis; place for $1800. Feb 76

The above information comes from Louis Dorr's letters.

In the 'Panola County History' on page 69 he is shown as Civil War Veteran

Paul Dorr's Comments:

Married Josephine Bishop.
Children. First, male, in the order of their ages; then female, similarly. Ira, Clinton. Maud, Byrd, Eleanor, Ora Lee, Ethel. Uncle Norman was a strong disciplinarian and Aunt Jo a splendid woman of determined character. I always thought Uncle Norman was very gentle with the girls but he was positive and (to my juvenile mind) authoritarian with the boys. [Incidentally, we probably need more of such parental firmness in these restless, revolutionary days of the sixth and seventh decades of the century]. I have often spoken of how I loved to visit Uncle Norman's household, not alone because Clinton and I were not far apart in age, but also by reason of the delicious Sickle pears that grew on their place and, in winter, the sausage Aunt Jodie cooked, so hot with cayenne peopper I wept in swal1owing it. Uncle Norman was afflicted (as I was, sorely, until I came to California) with asthma, and I shell never forget the odor - I would know that pungent smell today - of burning "Schiffman's Asthma Cure." In later times I would come to Uncle Norman's house and listen to Byrd's playing of the piano. Eleanor and my oldest Sister, Marion, were of nearly the same age, as was Edna

From Paul Dorr's Letter:

Married Patty (Trammel), [somebody tell me; I have forgotten]. Children. In the order of birth, I think. Male: Luther, Leon. Female: Edna, Jim [Vinnie?].

Uncle Ed and his family (before Jim made her appearance in this Vale of Tears) lived for a long time down below Grandma's house at what I shall call, for want of better information, the junction of the Hebron and Sardis [or maybe Como] - Panola road. I remember one year, when Marion and I were walking back and forth to school at Hebron, a tremendous snowstorm blew up; the snow fell until it was three feet deep in that part of Panola County. We couldn't get home from school but made it to Uncle Ed's house, where we "holed up" for two or three days. You may not know it, but Luther - who many years later became a lumberyard foreman and estimator for Carriers, and fell into habits of speech that literally butchered and beat the English language unmercifully - was, at school in my time, a grammar sharp! It is hard to believe, but he knew the English grammar backward and forward; he could bound a word or phrase or part of speech north, south, east and west. Honest Injun, I am not fooling. That bird was a purist. He was such a good language scholar that the teacher had a custom of requiring him to hold "seminars" and teach the other pupils grammar out in the grove under the trees! I suppose association with illiterate or indifferent whites and negroes at the sawmill and the lumber-yard, for so many years, caused him finally to feel that grammar was a futile weariness of the flesh and that speaking pure English was pedantry!

Edward married Martha "Patty\Pattie" Alice Trammell on 17 Nov 1875. Martha was born on 15 Feb 1858, died on 1 Aug 1935 in Panola Co., MS at age 77, and was buried in Rose Hill Cemetery, Sardis, Panola Co., MS.

From Paul Dorr's letter:

Married Lillie Mabry. Children: male, Paul, Mabry. Female, Marion, Margaret [yclept Maggie], Hazel, Victorine. (Uncle Rufus got burnt-out when Paul was a small boy maybe 5 years old. This child and his little sister Marion were visiting Grandma one Sunday. Their mother, I think, had gone to see her father who lived in the Eldorado neighborhood, and their father, after taking the children to visit their grandmother, went on, unless I am mistaken, to visit one of his brothers. Shortly after he returned to gather up the two infants and take them home, a negro riding bareback hell-for-leather turned from the road to the big gate of grandma's yard and yelled to my father that his house was burning down. Uncle Rufus (to keep the story intelligible) rushed off the steps of grandma's porch where he was sitting, the negro man tumbled from the horse and I can still see my father, heading north, his horse on a dead run - but alas! too late. Everything, even the money from his cotton crop, just sold, and the returns from which he had locked in a small cabinet (called in those days a "secretary"), went up in smoke. All of the brothers pitched in and helped Uncle Rufus build a new and simple house to house his family. I stood around, poked among the ashes, arid was an infantile observer of the building; and I was not the only observer: somebody had captured a screech-owl and tied him atop a gate-post. He sat there watching solemnly, but never uttered a screech to indicate whether or not he approved the plans.

Rufus married Lillie R. Mabry in Dec 1880 in Sardis, Panola Co., MS. Lillie was born in 1860, died about 12 Jul 1935 in Panola Co., MS about age 75, and was buried in Davis Chapel Cemetery, Panola Co., MS.

+ 49 M    i. Mabry Dorr .

50 M    ii. Rufus Marion Dorr Jr.

51 F    iii. Marion Lucille Dorr was born on 19 Aug 1884, died on 12 Feb 1905 in Panola Co., MS at age 20, and was buried in Davis Chapel Cemetery, Panola Co., MS.

   52 M    iv. Paul B. Dorr

Paul married Ruth.

+ 53 F    v. Margaret "Maggie" Dorr was born on 11 Sep 1887 and died on 20 May 1964 at age 76.

+ 54 F    vi. Hazel Dorr was born on 23 Sep 1892, died on 10 May 1970 at age 77, and was buried in Rose Hill Cemetery, Sardis, Panola Co., MS.

+ 55 F    vii. Victorine (D'orr) Dorr was born about 1895.

20. Frances "Fannie" (S. F.) Dorr was born about 1857.

From Paul Dorr's letter:

Aunt Fannv was rather timid - probably contributed to by the extreme extroversion of Joe McGuire; as a housekeeper she did not shine with exceptional brilliancy, but she was a kind and affectionate mother. When I was a very small child, Aunt Fanny and Mr. McGuire had married and were living in Coahoma County; my mother corresponded with her, telling her about my brown-to-auburn curls and my dawning intelligence [which was most probably very slow in rising above the horizon!] I found some of the old letters when I worked for Joe McGuire in the Delta many years later!

Frances married Joseph "Joe" A. McGuire.

Children from this marriage were:

   56 F    i. Lillian McGuire

   57 M    ii. Luther McGuire

   58 F    iii. Louise McGuire

59 M    iv. Guy McGuire was born on 28 Oct 1885, died on 27 Sep 1895 in Panola Co., MS at age 9, and was buried in Davis Chapel Cemetery, Panola Co., MS.

21. Eugene Emile Dorr was born on 14 Mar 1859, died on 28 Sep 1942 in Panola Co., MS at age 83, and was buried in Davis Chapel Cemetery, Panola Co., MS.

Eugene visits Madame Heric with Rufus in February 1979 and evidently had a good time at Mardi Gras.
